  • Uses

    Nitric acid is used in the production of many chemicals, including dyes, pharmaceuticals, synthetic fibers, insecticides, and fungicides. It is also used in the fertilizer industry to make ammonium nitrate. 

  • Safety

    Nitric acid can cause severe damage to tissues, such as burning, if it comes into contact with them. It can also cause eye injuries similar to those caused by hydrochloric acid burns. 

  • Exposure routes

    Exposure to nitric acid can occur through inhalation, ingestion, skin, and/or eye contact. 

  • Symptoms

    Symptoms of exposure to nitric acid include irritation to the eyes, skin, and mucous membrane, delayed pulmonary edema, pneumonitis, bronchitis, and dental erosion. 

  • Protection

    To protect yourself from nitric acid, you should prevent skin and eye contact, wash skin when contaminated, and remove contaminated clothing when wet. You should also provide eyewash (pH<2.5) and a quick drench (pH<2.5). 

  • Properties

    Nitric acid is a colorless to yellow liquid with a strong, irritating odor. It is also known as aqua fortis or azotic acid.
