A pH indicator is a chemical compound that changes color to indicate the acidity or basicity of a solution:

  • How it works

A small amount of pH indicator is added to a solution, and the solution's color changes based on the pH.

  • How it's used

pH indicators are available as liquid dyes or paper strips. Liquid indicators are added directly to solutions, while paper indicators are dipped into solutions and then compared to a color key.

  • What it doesn't do

When used in a dilute solution, a pH indicator doesn't affect the solution's acidity or alkalinity.

  • Examples

Methyl red and bromocresol green are examples of pH indicators. Methyl red is red at low pH, yellow at high pH, and orange in between. Bromocresol green is yellow at low pH, blue at high pH, and green in between.

  • Related concepts

pH stands for Potential of Hydrogen, which is the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration. The pH value indicates whether a substance is acidic, basic, or neutral.

  • What it is

A pH indicator is a weak acid or base that detects hydrogen ions (H+) or hydronium ions (H3O+) in a solution.
