  • Properties

Acetonitrile is less dense than water but its vapors are denser than air. It has a flash point of 42°F, a boiling point of 178.9°F, and a melting point of -49°F.

  • Uses

Acetonitrile is used in many applications, including:
    • Solvent: Used in analytical chemistry, organic reactions, and drug synthesis
    • Manufacturing: Used in the production of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, batteries, rubber products, and acrylic nail removers
    • Extraction: Used to extract fatty acids from animal and vegetable oils
  • Health hazards

Acetonitrile can cause severe health effects or death. It can irritate mucous membranes if inhaled in the short term, and can cause central nervous system effects like headaches, numbness, and tremors if inhaled chronically. It can also affect the blood, kidneys, liver, and thyroid.

  • Handling

Acetonitrile is easily ignited by heat, sparks, or flames. It can react with water, steam, or acids to produce flammable vapors that can form explosive mixtures. Containers of the liquid can explode when heated.
